Communications & Marketing/Media Relations Lead

Wahkohtowin seeking an experienced and dynamic Communications and Marketing/Media Relations Lead to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies and managing media relations. This role requires a strategic thinker with excellent communication skills and a deep understanding of media dynamics in the Indigenous Space.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop Communication Strategies: Create and implement comprehensive communication plans that align with the company's goals and objectives.

  • Media Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and other media professionals. Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries.

  • Press Releases and Media Kits: Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, media kits, and other communications materials to ensure accurate and effective messaging.

  • Public Relations Campaigns: Plan and execute public relations campaigns to promote events and overall awareness.

  • Content Creation: Produce high-quality written content for various platforms, including press releases, blog posts, articles, speeches, and social media.

  • Internal Communications: Ensure effective internal communication by creating and distributing company newsletters, announcements, and updates.

  • Event Management: Organize and manage press conferences, media briefings, and other events to promote the company's initiatives.

  • Analytics and Reporting: Monitor media coverage, track PR campaign performance, and prepare regular reports with insights and recommendations.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with marketing, product, and executive teams to ensure consistent and aligned messaging across all communication channels.

REQUIREMENTS
  • On the Job Experience: 5+ Public Relations, or a related field.

  • Digital Media Skills: Knowledge of digital marketing and social media strategies.

  • Industry Knowledge: Experience in the Not For Profit/Social Enterprise World is a plus.

  • Additional Languages: Proficiency in additional languages is advantageous.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or Community College Program in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.

  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in communications, media relations, or public relations, preferably in a corporate or agency setting

  • Media Relations Skills: Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with media professionals and secure media coverage.

  • Writing Skills: Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a strong portfolio of published work.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively.

  • Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective communication plans.

  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.

  • Attention to Detail: High level of attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and PR tools such as Cision, Meltwater, or similar platforms.

EXPECTATIONS
  • Typical working hours: Monday to Friday – 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

  • Additional hours may be required – especially where travel is required to meet owners, customers, project team and partners.

  • Requires a moderate amount of sitting for prolonged periods of time while using the computer. Moderate number of non-standard hours of work are required.

  • Comfortable working in the field outdoors in all weather.
